My break up music is rooted in the 1990s. Probably because it was the 90s last time I actually broke up with someone...well, actually I think it was January 2000. But close enough!
Now that I finally have all my stuff out of the house, I feel like I've closed a door on things a bit and can actually start to deal with the fact that a 12.5 year relationship has ended. My marriage has fallen apart.
I'm angry, but I'm also sad. There were dreams of a future that have been torn away from me. Hopes and expectations left to languish. I have to say goodbye not just to the man I have loved for more than a third of my life, but to the person I was when I was with him. To my role as wife, as partner. To the life that I had, that we shared.
My emotions are suitably mixed around it. The anger is quite well taken care of my this Alanis Morrissette classic, about a cheating ex - though my ex didn't exactly cheat on me, the fury she feels and feeds into her music here captures a lot of what I'm feeling.
Continuing the theme of anger, here is the only non-90s song to feature in this playlist, so far - So What by Pink, about a bad breakup. She's strong and independent or at least that's what she's showing the world!
And still feeling angry, this was recommended to me by my sister who is a huge Fiona Apple fan:
And as I passed through all the anger and embraced it and rocked out to it, so it was that I came to feel sad. Really bloody sad. And for the first time I properly acknowledged that.
These were both my breakup songs in the 90s, not that I had a lot of relationships - not long term ones anyway - but they did see me through a couple of sad man-related occasions.
No Doubt - Don't Speak:
And Hello (Turn Your Radio On) by Shakespeare Sister. Don't think this is about a breakup. Actually I have no idea what it's about, but it was played on repeat for at least a day when I broke up with a boyfriend of 6 weeks back in the summer of '99, so to me it's a breakup song.
And finally, to finish - a song about looking forward. I got my hair done today, a new look for a new life! The fabulous Ella Fitzgerald's version of I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right out of my Hair. Actually, this isn't a 90s song either - it's way older, and it sure has stood the test of time!

More Christmas songs!!!
Ok, some more of my favourites...
Including the funny, odd little intro - David Bowie and Bing Crosby, Little Drummer Boy
Little Donkey - this reminds me of the time when I, in 2nd or 3rd class (I was 8 or 9) played Mary in the nativity play in school. I know, right?! Me! Mary. I can still remember, I played Mary so I had lines, and then I had to take a step back and join the singers and sing the song with them. It's a beautiful song.
Let it Snow, by Dean Martin. This is the song that plays at the end of Die Hard, and Die Hard 2 - some of my favourite Xmas films!Yippie Kay-yay, motherfucker!
East 17 - Stay another day. Oh my. This takes me back to the Milford Inn in the 1990s. Slow sets, and no one asking big, awkward, gangly-legged me out to dance probably because I was taller than them, and weird. Worried I would never, ever have my first kiss when everyone else was out there on the dancefloor eating the faces off one another. Wishing I could kiss one of the members of East 17 - can't remember his name now, had a massive crush on him. The one on the right in the video.

This is so cheesy, so kitsch, and yer man is such a poser. But hey, this is the time of the year for cheese (both the song type, and that served with a good glass of wine...) The Darkness - Don't Let the Bells End

Christmas songs!!!
Yeah, I'm an atheist. Yeah, I celebrate Christmas/Xmas/whatever.
The Christians stole it from the pagans, so why can't the secularists steal it from the Christians? A festival in winter is such a good idea, especially when you live in a plac where there is such a difference between summer and winter in terms of temperature and natural light. We need to meet up with friends and family, we need to eat good (and bad) food, drink wine and talk nonsense and laugh at the tv and each other and ourselves.
So with that in mind, here are some of my favourite Christmas songs:
Twisted Sister's version of Come All Ye Faithful (animated video version - this is awesome)
Transsiberian Orchestra - Carol of the Bells (but pretty much all of Transsiberian Orchestra's songs are awesome. Christmassy and headbang-y. What more could you ask for?!)
Actually, TSO are so good, here is another of their tracks:
Jona Lewie - Stop the Cavalry. Anti war and Christmassy. Again, what more could you ask for?
And then of course, The Pogues and the late, great Kirsty McCall - Fairytale of NewYork. This makes me laugh and cry and turn the radio up full blast and dance around the kitchen like a crazy person when it comes on. Bad language and grumbles and drinking, now that's an Irish Christmas!
I have more favourites, I'll post them another day probably, this will have to do for now!

Songs my Daughter loves
E isn't really interested in the TV yet, but she does like to watch some music videos on youtube.
These are some of her favourites - most by Caspar Babypants, AKA Chris Ballew, who used to be in The Presidents of the United States of America (famous for their mid 90s songs Peaches and Lump) of whom I was a fan, back in the day! We were given a Caspar Babypants CD as a gift soon after E was born, and while she has long since outgrown the babygrows and bibs and booties, Babypants music has enduring popularity!
This is her current favourite, a funny silly song about Stompy the Bear
Former favourite, she still loves it, it's a catchy tune!
She calls them "space cows" and pronounces it "bana-mana"!
This one is hilarious...
Beware the following song, it's so catchy you'll find yourself singing it even when your child has long gone to bed and you're meant to be having some adult time..
Another impossibly catchy one, and you can dance to this one too (trust me, I have...)
She likes some TV theme tunes, even though she doesn't watch the shows yet, I sometimes sing or hum them to her before I read the books(her poor ears...)!
And three slightly more peaceful ones, to finish:
